A Study on the Objective Binocular Vision Function Inspection Using Eye Tracking Technology

Abstract
Purpose : This research analyzes the change in pupil size and pupillary distance using the infrared pupil detection technique employed in eye gaze tracking to objectively quantify binocular performance.

Methods : The level of dissociation was assessed by conducting a cover test with an infrared filter shielding lens at long (3 m) and close (0.4 m) distances to 23 men and women (average age of 27.27¡¾8.84 years). And, to measure the AC/A ratio, a ¡¾1.00 D lens was placed in front of the eyes at close range. All the procedures were captured on film using an infrared camera.
Additionally, using OpenCV (Open-Source Computer Vision), the pupillary distance and pupil area for each image frame were calculated.

Results : The T-test revealed no statistically significant difference between the two test results (p<0.050) for the long-distance cover test and the near-field cover test. The Bland-Altman consistency analysis revealed that most results fell within the 95% confidence range between the two measurements. When ?1.00 D was used, the gradient AC/A ratio was p=0.015, and when +1.00 D was used, it was p=0.823. As a consequence, when the ?1.00 D lens was inserted, there was a significant change, although the calculated AC/A ratios did not indicate a significant difference.

Conclusion : Based on the infrared pupil detection technique utilized in Eye Gaze Tracking technology, an objective inspection method for binocular function was developed in this study.
The subjective test method's limitations are expected to be overcome if the objective binocular function test method, which analyzes changes in pupil size and pupillary distance, is used in actual clinical practice.
